A short circuit study determines available fault current throughout the system and evaluates whether equipment is properly rated to interrupt and withstand it.

An ideal system is one where short circuit availability does not exceed the rated short circuit withstand capabilities of the equipment. Establishing whether that is true of your system is the first question every other study depends on — a coordination study built on the wrong fault currents coordinates the wrong system, and an arc flash study built on them produces labels that understate the hazard.

Scope

  • Three-phase, line-to-line and line-to-ground fault calculations
  • Verification of switchgear, transformer, breaker and fuse ratings
  • Identification of under-rated equipment
  • Recommendations for system strengthening
